Claude's Story

Every public piano installation is a collaboration. The piano that became Claude was donated to Play Me Again Pianos by Dale and Patti Greig. Then this project sponsored by Walton High School Visual Art Teacher, Kathleen Petka, inspired Amy Hattori, Co-President of the National Art Society (NAHS) for 2018-19, to create a design for it based on Claude Monet’s iconic water lilies series. Working through the pandemic, NAHS Co-Presidents for 2019-20 Aliza Qureshi and Carey Thomas brought Hattori’s design to life by coordinating the prep work, painting and sealing of the piano.

Claude’s location is amazing, and Hattori’s Monet inspired design is a perfectly lovely addition to the bank of Wildcat creek. Unlike a portable instrument, it's not practical to pickup an acoustic piano and play it among the trees  -- but you can play Claude in a veritable forest, and it's a breathtaking experience.  If you haven't played Claude yet, you really should.  It's an experience not to be missed!
