Carly is the name of our piano with the butterfly theme.  It was designed by Theresa Dean, an art teacher at Springmont - Atlanta's First Montessori School.   The concept for the piano, “Monarchs in Flight”, was inspired by her “love of the Monarch butterfly, it’s journey, and it’s beautiful artistic possibilities.”

It’s apropos that so much of the Springmont School family participated in painting Carly.  It was the  third year (2016-2017) that the school, led by Theresa, participated in Journey North’s Symbolic Migration project.

“In the fall, over 60,000 students across the globe create symbolic butterflies and send them to Mexico.  Children who live beside the monarchs’ winter sanctuaries in Mexico protect the paper butterflies and return them in the spring. “Through Symbolic Migration”, children are united by the monarch butterfly and celebrate its spectacular migration.  They learn authentic lessons of conservation and international cooperation."   (From Journey North's website.)

According to Jerri King, Head of School at Springmont, “The visual and performing arts are integral to all Springmont students’ learning experiences, from Toddler through Middle School. The arts are central to our Core values, and the give a student the capacity for creative self expression.  We are happy we can share this piano with the community, which has been painted by students and alumni.”

We were ecstatic when The Woodruff Arts Center reached out to us about getting a piano on their campus.  Actually, we learned that they've wanted one for quite awhile.  ”As the home of world class art for all, The Woodruff Arts Center is excited about the opportunity to partner with Play Me Again pianos in bringing community engaging street pianos to Midtown, the cultural hub of Atlanta and Southeastern U.S.,” said Gary Sayers, Director of Marketing & Patron Experience for The Woodruff Arts Center.

We think Carly is a lovely tribute to Theresa’s love of the Monarch butterfly,  and a wonderful addition to The Woodruff Arts Center.  Don’t you agree?

About Theresa Dean

Theresa received her Bachelor of Fine Arts at Louisiana State University.  She currently resides in the metro Atlanta area teaching art in two separate Montessori schools.  “I am a lifelong artist who has found a home in the Montessori community.  There is nothing better than being able to give children the tools they need to express their own creativity.”

About Springmont School

Springmont School began as First Montessori Class of Atlanta in 1963 when a group of parents, who were looking for an alternative to traditional education, started a Montessori classroom with eight students in the basement of Atlanta’s Pace Academy. The school later amended its name to First Montessori School of Atlanta to reflect its growth. Today, Springmont School boasts a diverse student body that extends from toddler classes through middle school. The school is a member of the Southern Association of Independent Schools and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SAIS/SACS), and is fully accredited by American Montessori Institute (AMI) and Atlanta Area Association of Independent Schools (AAAIS). Springmont is located at 5750 Long Island Drive, on a seven-acre wooded campus. Additionally, Springmont owns an 86-acre mountain retreat in Summerville, Ga., known as the Landschool. Springmont School is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, governed by a Board of Trustees and led by a Head of School.  For more information, visit springmont.com.
