Open Call For Artists

Looking for a chance to showcase your artistic talent and
make a positive impact on your community?

Play Me Again Pianos, a registered 501(c)(3) charitable organization that places public pianos throughout Metropolitan Atlanta, in partnership with Atlantic Station, is currently seeking proposals from talented visual artists to create a one-of-a-kind painting for a new public piano!

As an artist, you'll have the opportunity to design and paint an upright piano that will be accessible to everyone in the community. We're looking for apolitical designs suitable for all ages.

This is a fantastic opportunity for both emerging and professional artists to display their work to the public while contributing to a worthy cause. Whether you're just starting out or have years of experience, we encourage you to submit your design proposal and be a part of this exciting initiative.

OPPORTUNITY / LOCATION

We’re seeking design proposals from visual artists to paint an upright public piano to be placed near the box office at the Regal Atlantic Station Movie Theater.

The exhibition will last for the playable life of the piano. The estimated life of a sheltered outdoor piano is 2-5 years.

Budget

Atlantic Station will provide a one-time stipend of $750.00. The artist is responsible for purchasing all supplies.

Design Parameters

●  Upbeat, joyful, family friendly designs will be considered. Colorful designs are strongly encouraged.

●  Design proposals should include all piano cabinetry surfaces and include the back of the piano. Music stands are permanently removed and are not part of the design.

●  Painting the keys or any mechanical part is not permitted.

●  Incorporate the bench into the overall concept. Plan to paint the phrase “Play Me Again” on one of the long vertical sides.

●  Do not attach anything to the instrument.

●  Artwork must not contain copyrighted materials.

●  Advertisements and branding beyond artist signatures are not permitted.

Project Expectations

●  Artists must have a work space/studio into which a piano can be easily moved.

●  Play Me Again Pianos will deliver the piano to the artist and to the host location.

●  Artists will receive the Play Me Again Pianos Artist Guide with information about prepping, painting and finishing the project.

●  Artists will sand and prime the piano before painting it.

●  Artists will adapt their design to the piano provided.

●  Our technicians must access the internal mechanisms of the piano for tuning and maintenance. Do not paint the piano closed. As each piano is different, arts will be coached when they receive the piano.

●  Artists will apply two coats of a clear sealer once the paint is dry.

●  The piano must be completed and dry (including the clear sealer) seven days before being moved to the host location.

●  All pianos are the sole property of Play Me Again Pianos, Inc. and, as such, your physical piano artwork is a donation from the time painting begins.

●  Pianos are named by Play Me Again Pianos, Inc. Suggestions are welcomed.

Artist Acknowledgements

●  The artists will be invited to sign the piano just as they would any other painting.

●  The names of the artists will appear on an engraved plate on the piano.

●  The artists will be acknowledged in the press releases and invited to provide a quote about their inspiration for the design concept or about the project as a whole.

●  The artists will be invited to cut the ribbon at the unveiling event.

●  The artists will be credited on the Play Me Again Pianos website.

●  The artists will be credited on the Google map “Public Pianos in Metro Atlanta.”

Artist Selection

The winning design proposal will be chosen by Play Me Again Pianos in consultation with the host location.

Project Timeline

Submission Requirements

  1. Artist contact information including name, phone number, and email address.
If applying as an artist team, please designate one team member as the primary contact.

  2. Artist studio address for piano delivery.
Any more than a few stairs may disqualify a space. Please include pictures of all stairs that would be involved in order to move the piano into the work space.

  3. A rendering of the proposed piano design showing all sides of the piano.
Artists may download an optional design template from PlayMeAgainPianos.org or request one by emailing: Staff@PlayMeAgainPianos.org.

  4. Estimated total time needed to complete the prep, painting, and finish work.

  5. Brief artist biography.

  6. Artists may submit as many renderings as they like. Include all sides of the piano for each design concept.

  7. Send items 1-5 in one email to: Staff@PlayMeAgainPianos.org.

Renderings received but not chosen for this installation will remain with Play Me Again Pianos for future consideration in other host locations. Artists will be contacted if their design concept is chosen at a later date and offered the opportunity to paint a piano at that time.
